Jericho is one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. It was built even before humans started growing their own food, and once they did (around 10,000 years ago) they were able to sustain much more life in the city.

In the next update, you will be able to plant wheat and harvest it with your villagers after you build the temple. This is a much secure way of gathering food and it will enable you to focus more on other aspects of your rising civilization.
